Toxicological Survey of African Medicinal Plants provides a detailed overview of toxicological studies relating to traditionally used medicinal plants in Africa, with special emphasis on the methodologies and tools used for data collection and interpretation. The book considers the physical parameters of these plants and their effect upon various areas of the body and human health, including chapters dedicated to genotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and specific organs and systems. Following this discussion of the effects of medicinal plants is a critical review of the guidelines and methods in use for toxicological research as well as the state of toxicology studies in Africa. With up-to-date research provided by a team of experts, Toxicological Survey of African Medicinal Plants is an invaluable resource for researchers and students involved in pharmacology, toxicology, phytochemistry, medicine, pharmacognosy, and pharmaceutical biology. Offers a critical review of the methods used in toxicological survey of medicinal plants Provides up-to-date toxicological data on African medicinal plants and families Serves as a resource tool for students and scientists in the various areas of toxicology [Victor_Kuete]_Toxicological_Survey_of_African_Med_BookZZ.org_
The Igbo people and their unique culture represents a mercurial bridge of time, with potentials of linking the contemporary mind to the mystic realms from whence original knowledge can be profoundly grasped and brought down to earth for practical applications of many vital interests. In this work, Nwafor, a reincarnated Eze Dibia of Ururo-Umunze descent, distills the knowledge, wisdom and experiences of nine life-times of intense spiritual work, culminating in a unique exegesis of Igbo reality and cultural phenomenon. Leopards of the Magical Dawn _Science and the Cosmological Foundations of Igbo Culture_

Man through the ages has widely held the importance of being able to hold the evil eye at bay. 0710307136Amulets
High Price is the harrowing and inspiring memoir of neuroscientist Carl Hart, a man who grew up in one of Miami’s toughest neighborhoods and, determined to make a difference as an adult, tirelessly applies his scientific training to help save real lives. Young Carl didn't see the value of school, studying just enough to keep him on the basketball team. Today, he is a cutting-edge neuroscientist—Columbia University’s first tenured African American professor in the sciences—whose landmark, controversial research is redefining our understanding of addiction. In this provocative and eye-opening memoir, Dr. Carl Hart recalls his journey of self-discovery, how he escaped a life of crime and drugs and avoided becoming one of the crack addicts he now studies. Interweaving past and present, Hart goes beyond the hype as he examines the relationship between drugs and pleasure, choice, and motivation, both in the brain and in society. His findings shed new light on common ideas about race, poverty, and drugs, and explain why current policies are failing. high price
This insightful work chronicles the life of George Washington Carver, the renowned African American scientist and teacher. George Washington Carver: A Biography begins with a discussion of the political and social circumstances in Missouri where Carver was born into slavery, circa 1864. Readers will follow Carver through his formal education to his decision to accept Booker T. Washington's offer to teach and do research at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The bulk of the volume focuses on Carver's career at Tuskegee, a career that spanned nearly five decades, from 1896 until Carver's death in January 1943.The book highlights Carver's major achievements, including his championing of crop rotation and the hundreds of products he created from peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other plants native to the South. In addition to Carver the scientist, students will meet Carver the man, who, for example, loved art and painted throughout his life.
The book provides significant insight into the factors that affect the careers of these scientists and, importantly, gives voice to the many men and women who overcame discrimination, prejudice, and racism to build successful scientific careers. Although 70 percent of those interviewed felt that their careers had been hindered by discrimination, less than a handful expressed any regrets about choosing a career in chemistry. Remarkably, these chemists refused to allow racism to stifle their achievement. Although a disproportionate number of the chemists had their birth origins in the South, however, most pursued their careers outside the region and branched out across the nation. Many of those individuals had profound impacts in both industrial and academic settings but this book also chronicles the hardships that many faced. This book provides the opportunity for a full range of voices, from a number of perspectives, to be heard. [Jr__Willie_Pearson]_Beyond_Small_Numbers__Volume__bookos-z1.org_
Like pioneers in any field, these women were more than just chemical researchers or educators; they were true "Renaissance women," often dually employed as reporters, editors, activists, or even priests, and playing leadership roles in national and grassroots organizations. Brown's factual accounts, while often impassive and dull, are greatly informative, and are supported by extensive citations of texts, journal articles, and personal interviews. Although books on African American chemists and female African American scientists do exist, this book is the first biographical reference on this specific underrepresented population. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Students of all levels and general readers. [Jeannette_Brown]_African_American_Women_Chemists_bookos-z1.org_
