Back in print for the first time in 30 years, this volume provides a brilliant and accessible summation of the ideas of left Marxist giant C. L. R. James. Originally delivered in 1960 as a series of lectures in his native Trinidad, James’s wide-ranging erudition and enduring relevance are powerfully displayed. From his analysis of revolutionary history and the role of literature, art, and culture in society to an interrogation of the ideas and philosophy of such thinkers as Rousseau, Lenin, and Trotsky, this is a magnificent tour de force from a critically engaged thinker at the height of his powers. Still relevant to politics today and an essential introduction to an important body of work, the ideas of C. L. R. James remain as necessary and illuminating for this century as they have for the last. 1604863110mp
The current period has seen the rise of Islamophobia, a resurgence of fascism in Europe and constant attempts to scapegoat immigrants. This book seeks to challenge the idea that racism is inevitable by taking a critical look at the origins and history of racism in Britain and abroad. The eight authors' shared Marxist approach and activist history ensure a smooth narrative and a clear argument for the struggle for liberation today. 1909026387
In this important new study, Hutchinson examines in detail the American Communist party's largely unsuccessful effort to win the allegiance of black Americans in the 20th century. From the time of its creation in 1919, Hutchinson argues, the party sought to recruit African Americans, initially by arguing that Marxist ideology best served their interests; further, Communist ideologues declared that injustices visited upon African Americans resulted from economic and class antagonism, not racial bigotry. But as Hutchinson clearly demonstrates, tensions between blacks and "Reds" increased as time passed and as a African American leaders such as W.E.B. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, and Kelley Miller made it clear that they would not permit African American interests and agendas to become subservient to party ideology. While Communism may have appealed to some, Hutchinson shows that most blacks were not interested in the party, its penchant for theoretical abstraction, or its call for proletarian revolt. He also dispels the widely held misconception that 20th century black political movements were largely creations of Communist initiatives. Such notions, he argues, are not only wrong, but serve as impediments to understanding African American organizations in the context of their unique and historically black identity. Portraying C. L. R. James as a leading figure in the independence movement in the West Indies and in the black and working-class movements in both Britain and the United States, this volume provides an extensive introduction to James's life and thought before presenting two critical works that illustrate the tremendous breadth and depth of his worldview. Both long-out-of-print pamphlets display James's contributions to Marxist and revolutionary theory as he documents and elaborates on the aspects of working-class activity that constitute the revolution in today's world. Fully encapsulating James's thoughts on democracy and workers' emancipation, these essential works represent the principal themes that run through James's life: implacable hostility toward all "condescending saviors" of the working class and an underlying faith in the power of ordinary people to build a new world. C.L.R. James is one of the leading Marxist interpreters of colonialism and anti-colonial struggle in the 20th century. Famous for his literary and cultural, as well as theoretical, writings, his thinking engaged with a vast range of issues including civil rights, race, class, socialism, cricket, and cultural production. Notes on Dialectics, first publsihed in 1948, is his key theoretical work. It os one of the most complex and original Marxist documents ever to come out of the U.S., where James lived for 15 years. It provides a thorough reexamination of of the Hegelian foundations of Marxist theory and a new interpretation of the history of thelabor movement through a close engagement with Hegel's Logic. To this day, the book represents a brilliant example of a living, productive engagement with Marxist theory and politics. This new edition, with a new introduction from leading James scholars, ensures that this classic books will continue to reach a new generation of scholars and students of Marxist theory as well as activists. Cultural Writing. African American Studies. In this radical new work, the struggle for African American liberation is analyzed using the Marxist dialectic as a way of understanding both the forces inside the civil rights movement and its revolutionary implications for the capitalist system against which it fought. REVOLUTIONARY INTEGRATION functions both as a survey and analysis of not only the battle for African American liberation, but also the on-going interracial struggle against capitalist oppression in all of its forms. "A wealth of information about the perilous and often horrific circumstances of African Americans as they/we struggle to gain the most basic of human rights...connects the disenfranchisement of Blacks in America and the rabid, rampant Capitalism which characterizes our every experience" [Richard_Fraser__Tom_Boot]_Revolutionary_Integrati_bookos-z1.org_
